I have often indulged in various forms of satire. These pieces are both playful and serious.
Doppelgänger plays on questions of gender. While the title suggests a double, I created instead, an androgynous figure. The documentation may not highlight the various human appendages, but they are there. As a feminist, I challenge the roles women are asked to play since the beginning of time. Hence, Doppelgänger II references The Earthy Paradise.
In A Vaz challenges the viewer to question their perception of immediate surroundings. There are numerous physical cues that elicit more questions than answers. The “flower arrangements” have mechanical parts, some threatening. Or is this a still life, one that isn’t really still, or life? This series continued to influence subsequent work, much of which became even more introspective.
Remainders: Human Legacy was created for the “Landfill Art Project”. The juxtaposition of human refuse and the threatened environment was paramount.
